A27 Chichester Planned Safety Improvements

Safety improvements and better traffic flows at a key junction on the A27 in Chichester will be the result of work the Highways Agency will be carrying out this autumn.

A new right-hand turn facility at the Oving crossroads and revised road markings means traffic turning into Oving Road from the east will be separated from other vehicles. In addition, the phasing of traffic signals at the junction will be improved to reduce queuing or slow-moving traffic.

Work to modify the junction will begin on Monday 19 October, for six weeks during the day, with some overnight work. This will include the traffic signals being switched off, with temporary “give way” signs.

For the safety of road users and road workers, vehicles travelling westbound will not be able to turn right from the A27 into Oving Road. The diversion will be via the Bognor roundabout to return on the eastbound carriageway to turn left into Oving Road. Similarly, eastbound road users wishing to turn right into Shopwhyke Road from the A27 will be diverted via the Portfield roundabout to return on the westbound carriageway to continue their journey.

Road users wishing to turn right onto the A27 from Oving Road will be diverted via the Portfield roundabout to return on the westbound carriageway and road users wishing to turn right from Shopwhyke Road will be diverted via the Bognor roundabout to return on the eastbound carriageway.

Lane closures and a 50mph speed limit will be in place throughout the work.

Peter Phillips, Highways Agency Route Performance Manager for West Sussex, said; “The new right-hand turn facility will improve the safety of road users at this point on the A27. As the traffic signals will be rephased, we would ask road users to be patient while the new sequencing comes into effect.”
