A man who died as he failed to stop for Police in Lancing has been names as 61-year-old Guiseppe Mancuso of Brighton.
Police responded to a 999 call from a member of the public who reported seeing a car collide with a parked car in Downview Road, Worthing. Two further calls were received from witnesses who saw the damaged car being driven erratically in the town.
The red Nissan was spotted by officers in a marked car in Brighton Road, Worthing, who signalled Mancuso to stop. Shortly after, his vehicle lost control in Grinstead Lane, Lancing, where it hit the tree.
Ch Supt Paul Morrison, head of Operations for Sussex Police, said: “Our sympathies are with Mr Mancuso’s family and friends at this sad time. The circumstances surrounding the incident will be fully and properly investigated to establish the facts and events that led to his death.
“We are very keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the initial collision or the events leading up to the final incident, including anything that they may feel relevant that may have led to this sad conclusion.”
As is normal procedure when police are in the vicinity of a crash, the matter was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). They have studied the circumstances of the incident and referred the case back to Sussex Police for local investigation.
