Elderly man gives up licence on Police advice

A 79 year old man who was involved in a recent damage only traffic collision in Littlehampton, and as a result surrendered his licence, has thanked the officers who dealt with his collision by donating £1000 to the Police Dependants Trust.

The incident occurred on 22 October when the driver collided with a traffic bollard in Arundel Road, Littlehampton. Little damage was caused and police had decided against taking any formal enforcement action.

The driver, who lives in Chichester, wrote to the police officers and thanked them for making him realise that after driving for 49 years, it was time to hang up his licence. Inspector Phil Nicholas of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit said, “This is a very kind gesture from the driver. Thankfully no one was hurt in this collision, I am also pleased that the driver has taken a very pragmatic approach to his ability to continue to drive.”
