Police in Sussex have carried out an operation focussing on School transport in Eastbourne.
Operation Coachman is a national operation which focuses on school transport methods such as buses, coaches, taxis and minibuses, which regularly carry child passengers.
The operationwas carried out to ensure these vehicles are roadworthy and the drivers are suitable persons to work in such an environment.
During the operation seven vehicles from transport operators were inspected, one of which was issued with a delayed prohibition due to a defect on the brakes and three were warned regarding failing to display obligatory signs.
Inspector Steve Grace from East Sussex Road Policing Unit said: “There is no more valuable load than a bus full of children. When a parent entrusts their child into the care of a transport operator they need to feel confident that their child is going to be as safe as they can be.
“The work carried out by my staff is designed to check the operators’ compliance with legislation in respect of both safety and criminality.
“My officers are dedicated to reducing death and injury on the roads of Sussex, as such they will regularly conduct checks which can reduce the number of such tragic events.”
