A road policing operation aimed at reducing the number of those killed or seriously injured on the roads of Wealden District has been announced.

Operation Triangle has been launched and will run throughout the Summer. Insp Steve Grace, head of road policing in East Sussex says that it will: “Enforce, engage and educate.”

“We are committed to reducing KSIs in East Sussex and especially across the Wealden District, which has a disproportionately high number compared to other areas in Sussex. For the next three months, we will be using marked and unmarked vehicles to target those who think they are above the law and anyone using the roads illegally can expect to be caught and dealt with.”

He continued: “We are aiming this message not only at road users, but also their relatives and friends. Drive sensibly and legally and we won’t bother you, but drive drunk, at speed, without insurance, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone or just anti-socially generally and you’ll be seeing our blue lights flashing in your rear view mirror.”

Police are working closely with the East Sussex Casualty Steering Group and the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership and the operation is being supported by East Sussex County Council.

The Police Community Speedwatch has been launched in Woodingdean near Brighton as locals say it is only a matter of time until someone is killed due to cars using the well-know short cut.

A team of volunteers will be patrolling the local roads and using a state-of-the-art speed gun to note down the registrations of those breaking the law.

Local councillor Dee Simpson told us; “The problem is because traffic builds up people do use our roads right through the centre of the village as rat runs and we’ve got several long straights of road which do encourage people to speed unfortunately and so we’ve had lots and lots of complaints about how we can look at ways to calm the traffic down.’

She added; “More and more traffic is coming through, at the moment we haven’t had any fatalities, although we did have a young lad killed in Cowley Drive a couple of years ago, but eventually there will be.”

James Davidson from Sussex Police commented; “The residents not actually enforcing the speed limits, they’re recording the indexes and passing it onto us. We are then sending a letter of warning onto them, saying they’ve been clocked speeding by residents. If they continue that behaviour they’re then targeted for enforcement by the Police.

The team of around ten volunteers will monitor the traffic at various times of the day and warn that all areas in the town will be targeted.

Administrator for the scheme, David Hodgson said;; “It’s not only this road we’ll be doing, there’s a number of roads but this road is a particular problem with speeding, particularly when the Falmer Road has a traffic jam. People turn off at the Falmer Road and come down Bexhill Road at very high speeds.”

The Earl of March, patron of the UK’s most celebrated motor sport meetings – the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival – is delighted to announce today the provisional 2010 dates for these hugely popular annual events.

The 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed is provisionally scheduled to take place over the weekend of 2-4 July, subject to final confirmation of the rest of the motor sport calendar. It will be the 18th running of the world’s largest celebration of motoring culture and promises to be packed with action and excitement as the planet’s most glamorous racing machinery and famous drivers gather together in the beautiful surroundings of Goodwood Park. The 2010 theme for this leading motor sport event is currently being finalised and will be announced in the coming weeks.

For 2010 the unique Goodwood Revival is provisionally scheduled for the weekend of 17-19 September. The Revival is truly a magical step back in time and celebrates the halcyon days of motor racing as it used to be with all of the accompanying spectacle and glamour of the era. Competitors and spectators alike dress in period fashions with the finest sights and entertainment of the pre-1966 era for all to enjoy.

Both 2010 Goodwood motor sport events promise a spectacular array of cars and motorcycles, plus fabulous star drivers and riders to thrill the crowds. As enthusiasts have come to expect from Goodwood, a series of further enhancements will be made for 2010, including upgrades to many entertainment facilities, flexible grandstand seating with more roaming viewing available, plus improvements to the on-site camping facilities.

Watch this space over the coming weeks and months for the latest news and updates on these ‘must attend’ sporting and social occasions, with something for everyone!

As in previous years, admission to both Goodwood motor sport events will be strictly by advance ticket only, with 2010 ticket sales commencing from 1 November 2009. Tickets and further information for the 2010 Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival can be ordered by registering on-line at the ‘My Goodwood’ section of the Goodwood website (www.goodwood.com/motorsport/), or via the Ticket Hotline as follows:
